This exhibition in the Stanton Gallery represents three themes: 1) the seasons (including large scale paintings); 2) farm and food themes from our farm in Washington State; and 3) figure studies.I generally draw and paint in the style of contemporary realism and fall in love with the subjects that come under my scrutiny. The subject, however, is only part of the story. It’s the composition that guides the hand and the eye and creates the challenges.
The portrait and human figure have been a life-long study and fascination for me. There is no end to the variety and nuances that each person brings to the canvas or paper.
I work in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, and draw in all media including pastels. I have no favorite. Each medium imparts its beauty and its limitations.
I have been teaching drawing and figure drawing at Arapahoe Community College for 19 years and for even longer at Foothills Art Center as an instructor of an art course called “Concepts and Critique.” Previously, I was employed at the Denver Art Museum as docent trainer. My love of art history was amplified during that period of my life and remains a vital interest to me. --Susan Elliott
